Record of Compliance

In recent years, monitoring of the Yukon placer mining industry has shown an increasing level of compliance with required end-of-pipe discharge standards.

Average sediment discharge levels for active mines operating in compliance were 0.3 and 0.5 millilitres per litre in 2003 and 2004, much lower than the 5.0 millilitres per litre required for many mining operations.

Water samples at Carmacks Consultation meeting, June 2006From 1995 to 2005, between 89% and 99% of active placer mining operations were in compliance with regulatory standards.

This record reflects advances in settling pond design and mining practices over the past 10 to 15 years.
