About Us
The Yukon Placer Secretariat was established in December 2005 to assist governments to implement a new Regime for the management and regulation of placer mining in the Yukon. The Secretariat is a coordinating agency that resulted from a partnership between Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Yukon Government and the Council of Yukon First Nations.
The Secretariat's role is to:
- Coordinate the completion of the proposed Regime, including the development of watershed authorizations and monitoring protocols
- Be the main point of contact for the public, First Nations, industry and other interested parties
- Hold consultations and consider input before finalization of the Regime
- Facilitate the gathering of traditional knowledge for inclusion in the Regime
- Implement the Regime by 2007

The Secretariat's activities are overseen by the Joint Placer Implementation Committee (JPIC), which is made up of senior representatives of the Yukon Government, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Council of Yukon First Nations.
The Secretariat is assisted in its work by the Implementation Management Group (IMG), which also has representatives from the Yukon Government, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Council of Yukon First Nations.
The Secretariat has also begun to develop important working relationships with a number of boards and committees:
- Licensing and assessing boards such as the Yukon Water Board and the Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Board
- Boards mandated under the Yukon land claim process, such as the Yukon Fish and Wildlife Management Board, the Yukon Salmon Committee and Renewable Resource Councils in Yukon communities
It is expected that in future a Placer Advisory Council will be established to work with the Secretariat. It may include representatives from industry, stakeholders and other interested parties.
These relationships are illustrated in this Yukon Placer Secretariat Relationships diagram (
